Join the new Basic/Mainstream program for an adventure in fun, fitness, and friendship. You don't need a partner or any experience. If you can walk and listen at the same time, you can square dance. The benefits are healthy exercise of both mind and body. Our weekly program will teach you the Basic/Mainstream calls and the moves needed to dance anywhere.
This September, the club invites you to join us for a special introduction to square dancing. This evening of fun gives you a chance to try some easy calls. No dancing skills are required. Bring a friend or just bring yourself and try out square dancing. I'm sure you will enjoy the dancing as much as we do! Wednesday September 14 and 21, 2016 are fun nights for new dancers. There is no charge. So come, have some fun and meet some new friends. The introductory sessions begin at 7 PM at the Lothrop School Gym in Pittsford, VT and continues until 8:30.
The new dancer workshops will begin on Wednesday September 28 and continues each Wednesday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM at the Lothrop School Gym. Again no prior square dancing experience is required. Our club caller, Peter Tobin, will teach you every call. You will be assisted by our "club angels" who are experienced dancers and enjoy helping guide new dancers through the calls.
At sucessive Wednesday workshops, new calls are introduced and previously taught calls are practiced. You will be dancing and having fun from the first night. Because square dancing is a progression of learning dance calls, we prefer not to accept new program members after the workshops begin. The workshops continue thru April. Workshops are $6.00/person ($12.00/couple). New dancers may choose to prepay at the rate of $50.00/person for 10 workshops. This is a savings of $10.00/person. The prepayments are due at the beginning of each 10-workshop segment.
In modern square dancing, the Caller uses calls to direct the dance - most times making up the dance as he or she is calling. The dance is created as it progresses, so every dance can be different. It's not a repetitious dance, like the old barn dances. You never know what will be called next, so you have to listen and react. It is great exercise for the mind, as well as, the body. There are square dance clubs all over the US and around the world. So, when you go on vacation or a business trip, there probably is a square dance club near where you can join in on the fun. It's a good way to meet new friends and to find the local spots of interest. You can literally dance around the world.
Here are a few good reasons to learn square dancing:
It's easy to learn and lots of fun.
It's an inexpensive night out.
Enjoy making new friends.
It's a great stress reliever - you can't dance and worry.
It's low impact physical exercise. Burn between 200-400 calories/hr.
